Brief Biodata of Prof. Satish Kumar Garg

Born in Haryana and had his early school education from joint Punjab and then from Himachal Pradesh. Thereafter, Prof. Garg shifted to Haryana for college and University education. He completed his professional studies starting from BVSc & AH in 1977 to PhD in 1987 from the erstwhile Haryana Agricultural University (HAU), Hisar. Throughout his student life, he has been an outstanding and meritorious student and had been the recipient of different scholarships and fellowships, which included National Merit Scholarship, HAU Merit Scholarships, and ICAR and CSIR Senior Research Fellowships. Later in 1991, he was awarded Commonwealth Fellowship for postdoctoral studies in the UK as well.

He started his professional academic career as Assistant Professor in 1987 from Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Palampur, and based on hisoutstanding professional contributions in teaching and research, and academic credentials, he rose to the position of Professor in 1999, Head of the Department in 2004, and then selected as Dean in June 2009. He served in that capacity for eleven years till June 03, 2020. Thereafter he was selected as Registrar, Bihar Animal Sciences University (BASU), Patna and he served there for almost nine months.

Prof. Garg has more than four decades of experience of having being associated with veterinary education and research in different State Agricultural/Veterinary Universities, Central Agricultural Universities, ICAR and CSIR Institutes, ASRB and Public Service Commissions as a student, teacher, academician, researcher, examiner, expert, evaluator, inspector and policy planner. He has more than 18 years of administrative experience in the capacity of Registrar, Dean of Veterinary College, Dean College of Biotechnology, Dean Postgraduate Studies, Establishment Officer, Estate Officer, Coordinator Printing and Publication Division of the University and Head of the Department.

Based on his professional standing, Prof. Garg had been the President and Secretary General of two of the professional national societies for 12 years and recipient of prestigious Fellowships of National Academy of Veterinary Sciences, National Academy of Dairy Science, Indian Society of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Society of Toxicology (India). Twice, he was awarded ICAR-sponsored“Best Teacher Award” of the University. His PhD student was awarded ICAR’s Jawahar Lal Nehru Award for best PhD thesis and one of his MVSc student has been recipient of ICAR Netaji Subhash Fellowship for PhD in University of Edinburgh, UK. His many students have won many other prestigious young scientists awards of the professional societies. Twice, he has been awarded Ram Lal Agarwal Award for Outstanding Research in Medicinal Plants.

Prof Garg has more than 185 research publications in national and International journals of repute, published four books, delivered more than 35 invited and expert lectures, and attended more than 50 conferences, acted as examiner and expert in various state/central Universities including ICAR Institutes. He has guided more than 42 MVSc and PhD students and organized several national conferences, summer and winter schools, training programmes. He mustered more than Rs50 crores infrastructure development, experiential learning and research projects. He developed several linkages of his parent institutions with other SAUs, ICAR Institutes and NGOs, and Industry. By virtue of his professional recognition as researcher, teacher and administrator, he has the distinction of having been Chairman and member of several important expert committees and academic and management bodies of National Institutes, universities, and also Govt. of India, ICAR, ASRB, SAUs.
